I want to change the options of the image gallery (fotorama?) on the product page so that there will be dots. This is especially important to us on mobile, as on desktop there are thumbnails on the side, but on mobile users are not figuring out that there are more images to see.

Unfortunately, the theme doesn't have dots option for a gallery.
You can update your theme to the latest version 4.6.2 which has a feature to show thumbnails on mobile.
You can enable it at Theme settings -> Product Page & Quick View.
